System administration information Technician

Description

The Information System Administration Technician is responsible for supporting the computing needs of production and business systems. This is a professional and highly technical position requiring a diverse set of skills. This individual will demonstrate capabilities in planning, designing, configuring, and managing computer and network systems and their related components. The role demands deep knowledge of the latest technologies and trends, and the ability to resolve complex network, computer, and software issues across all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

Network Administration

  • Design, implement, and control security management using tools such as Cisco ASA Firewall, Cisco Secure ACS, and enterprise antivirus products. Maintain user accounts through Active Directory scripts and policies.
  • Responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting the enterprise messaging environment. This includes Front-End/Back-End configurations, as well as Outlook Web Access, Outlook Mobile Access, and overall mail flow.
  • Internet access control and monitoring.
  • Design, implementation, and control of switched network infrastructure, including hardware (Cisco Switches, Fiber/UTP interfaces, Fiber Trunk cables) and software (Secure ACS, VLAN provisioning, Wireless LAN).

Server Resource Administration

  • Initial setup, software installation, and security hardening of new server systems.
  • Daily operations related to server systems, including applying patches, enhancing security, and managing resources/accounts to ensure compliance with applicable standards and best practices.
  • Support data protection activities (backup and restore) across all servers.
  • Identify and initiate appropriate actions to restore normal services with minimal downtime.
  • Manage server and client resource availability through Terminal Server Load Balancing, Windows Clusters, and related technologies.
  • Provide technical support to database administrators and process engineers when needed.

Client Resource Administration

  • Maintain antivirus protection on all client resources.
  • Ensure Service Packs, OS patches, and special updates are implemented according to applicable standards and best practices.

Storage Administration

  • Design, implementation, and monitoring of all storage resources, including provisioning disk arrays and managing storage presentation.
  • Design, implementation, and management of Storage Area Network (SAN), including Fiber Channel switches, HBAs, cabling, and storage interconnects.

PBX/ASCOM Notice mail Administration

  • Perform Adds, Moves, and Changes to AVAYA PBX phone system programming as required, and deploy client hardware (IP Phones, IP softphones, etc.).
  • Perform Adds, Moves, and Changes to AVAYA Voicemail system as required.
  • Add equipment, modify configurations, and maintain ASCOM Wireless Phone system to ensure functionality. Coordinate repairs with various suppliers/vendors as needed to maintain spare parts inventory (phones, base stations, etc.).
  • Conduct technology needs analysis. Provide input in establishing IT department policies and procedures.
  • Support timely response to user requests through the use of Service Desk.

Materials, Equipment, and/or Products

  • Server and desktop computing hardware, including related operating systems.
  • Security appliances (firewalls, VPN devices).
  • Antivirus and anti-spyware products.
  • LAN and WLAN switching equipment, including LAN and WLAN testers and analyzers. Ethernet cabling (copper and fiber), termination tools (crimpers, polishers), and cable testers.
  • VoIP telephony equipment.
  • Internet browsers, Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Programming languages such as HTML, ASP, Power Shell, Visual Basic.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of experience in systems administration.
  • Intermediate knowledge of systems administration protocols, methodologies, and practices.
  • Intermediate skills in application programming applied to IT systems administration (VBScript, PowerShell, ASP).
  • Applicable knowledge of networks, client/server architecture, hardware and software architecture, system support disciplines, and client/server application development practices.
  • Applicable knowledge of Windows and general network security concepts.
  • Applicable knowledge and ability to configure and troubleshoot all Windows 2003 Server configurations.
  • Applicable knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server, as well as general SMTP concepts.
  • Knowledge and ability to configure and troubleshoot Active Directory, login scripts, Group Policy Objects, firewall configurations, security policies, and backup functions.
  • Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and configure desktop operating systems such as Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.
  • Working knowledge of various desktop software packages, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Working knowledge of various server packages, including MSSQL, ORACLE.
  • Strong analytical skills, effective interpersonal communication skills, and strong technical focus.
  • Bilingual: English and French (oral and written) preferred.
