Our client is a Quebec-based manufacturer of custom-built power electrical equipment, located in Granby in the Montérégie region and growing steadily. To support the design and development of its made-to-order solutions, the company is looking for a design engineer who will become the team’s technical reference. It is a central role for a hands-on professional who is as comfortable with manual calculations as with the realities of the shop floor.
The mandate
Working at the heart of the design team, you support the design and development of custom solutions in a manufacturing setting, within a business environment that is bilingual and largely English-speaking. You own the electromagnetic design, cost estimating and technical documentation, and you coordinate the work of the internal drafting and design resources. Within the first year, you are expected to deliver several design projects in parallel, on schedule and to quality standards, while raising the manufacturability and performance of the products.
The role day to day
- Prepare design schematics and the related technical documentation for each custom project
- Develop cost estimates from customer specifications and project requirements
- Perform the manual design calculations: number of turns, wire gauge and quantity, wire weight, insulation requirements and related electrical and mechanical parameters
- Act as the technical reference for new product development and custom solutions
- Analyze reported product or system failures and make sure effective corrective actions are put in place
- Communicate design information clearly to the 3D designer and other internal stakeholders, working from electrical and mechanical drawings
- Manage several design projects simultaneously and drive continuous improvement in design quality, manufacturability and product performance
The ideal profile
- University or college degree in electrical engineering or a related field (the engineering title does not need to be officially recognized in Quebec)
- Minimum 10 years of experience designing wound power electrical equipment; candidates with 5+ years are considered if they show marked resourcefulness, autonomy and speed of learning
- Mastery of manual design calculations (turns, wire gauge and weight, insulation) and a strong ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings
- Strong spoken and written English, required to work with English-speaking customers and colleagues; French is not mandatory, but openness to learning it is expected for long-term integration
- Good working knowledge of Excel; knowledge of SolidWorks is an asset
- Proven ability to run several projects in parallel, with strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
