Act as the technical subject matter expert for the high-voltage electrical design of wind, solar and storage projects at a leading Quebec renewable energy producer, based in Montreal on a hybrid schedule.
Up to $150,000 · Montréal, QC · Hybrid · Minimum 8 years · Full-time
The mandate
A leading Quebec-based renewable energy producer, active in wind, solar and energy storage with several gigawatts of operating assets and a substantial development pipeline, is looking to add a Principal Electrical Engineer to its expertise team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will act as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for the electrical design of large-scale projects: collector network, substation, gen-tie line and grid interconnection infrastructure. This is a high-impact mandate at the crossroads of development, procurement, construction and commissioning, in a fast-growing sector in Quebec and across North America.
The role day to day
- Lead the preliminary and detailed electrical design of wind, solar and battery storage (BESS) projects, from the collector network through to grid interconnection.
- Review and approve detailed engineering deliverables: single-line diagrams, substation layout drawings, protection and control philosophies, grounding, load flow, transient and dynamic stability, short-circuit and harmonic studies, protection settings, SCADA interfaces, and transformer and breaker specifications.
- Interpret study results and recommend technical mitigation measures: reactors, harmonic filters, STATCOM/SVC, protection adjustments.
- Manage tenders for substations and major electrical equipment, support the purchase of long-lead HV equipment such as power transformers and breakers, and provide technical support during commercial negotiations.
- Contribute to project budgets for the electrical scope (cost, schedule, risk) and support the grid interconnection process.
- Support the construction and commissioning teams, take part in site follow-ups and participate in due diligence reviews on select projects.
- Ensure compliance with codes, standards and interconnection requirements (IEC, IEEE, NEC/NF C, grid codes) and help maintain and optimize internal technical standards.
The ideal profile
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and member in good standing of the OIQ.
- More than eight (8) years of experience in electrical engineering, with strong high-voltage expertise.
- Hands-on experience with MV collector networks (34.5 kV), HV substations (typically 69 kV to 315 kV), gen-tie lines and interconnection infrastructure, power transformers and HV apparatus.
- Mastery of electrical drawings: single-line, three-line, DC schematics, instrumentation, protection logic.
- Proficiency or strong working knowledge of electrical study software such as PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP, EasyPower, EMTP or equivalent.
- English proficiency required to collaborate with teams and partners outside Quebec, and availability for occasional travel within Canada and the United States.
Key skills: PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP, EasyPower, EMTP, SCADA, OIQ, high voltage, substation design, collector network, protection and control, power transformers.
