Production Director — Saint-Jérôme — Up to $165,000

Our client, a North American leader in pulp and paper known for the low environmental footprint of its production, operates an integrated mill in Saint-Jérôme, in Quebec’s Laurentians. Its current Production Director is gradually heading into retirement, and the company is looking for the person who will take over and benefit from a structured transfer of his deep knowledge of the trade. This is a concrete opportunity to lead the operations of a three-paper-machine mill with a genuine seat at the management table.

The mandate

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the incumbent owns all operations tied to papermaking and shipping: three paper machines, the converting centre, the stock preparation department, receiving and shipping. He or she takes part in the operational and financial management of the mill as a member of the leadership team. The first-year objective is a seamless handover from the outgoing director while embedding health and safety, continuous quality improvement, environmental compliance and workforce training into daily operations, in close coordination with the mill’s other departments.

The role day to day

  • Lead the crews assigned to the paper machines and rally the teams around production targets
  • Enforce occupational health and safety rules, promote best practices and prevent risks
  • Track the budgets of projects tied to paper machine operations and shipping
  • Coordinate planned shutdowns, daily work, preventive and predictive maintenance and subcontracted work with project leads so deadlines are met
  • Drive performance indicators (KPIs) and keep troubleshooting guides, training guides and procedures current
  • Bring technical expertise to problem-solving, take part in equipment failure analysis and see that corrective actions eliminate repeat breakdowns
  • Propose and roll out efficiency initiatives, write and justify CAPEX projects and meet with suppliers

The ideal profile

  • University degree in engineering, operations management or an equivalent field
  • Minimum 10 years of operations management experience in an industrial setting, ideally pulp and paper
  • Management experience in a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated leadership in people management and occupational health and safety, with solid knowledge of continuous improvement
  • Comfortable with MS Office and production tracking tools such as PI
  • Fluency in French and English

Key skills: Production Management, Pulp and Paper, Paper Machines, Occupational Health and Safety, Continuous Improvement, Unionized Environment Management, Budget Management, CAPEX Projects, Failure Analysis, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

What our client offers

  • Highly competitive compensation, confirmed on the first call, plus a bonus program
  • A full-time, on-site position at the Saint-Jérôme, Quebec mill, with weekday and weekend on-call duty on an established rotation
  • A comprehensive group insurance program including drug and dental coverage, with the employer paying the majority of premiums
  • A defined contribution pension plan
  • A reimbursement program for sports activities, vision care and daycare expenses
  • A structured knowledge transfer with the outgoing director and a motivated, engaged and dynamic team
