Become the expert whose conclusions stand up in court — high-stakes structural failures, from the first site visit to the rehabilitated structure.
Up to $140,000 · Laval, QC · Hybrid · 5+ years · Full time
The mandate
Larouche Raymond is representing a confidential client, a leading Québec engineering firm recognized for the quality of its forensic engineering practice. Its fast-growing Expertise division is seeking a structural engineer to take on high-stakes files — collapses, settlements, vibrations, cracking and water infiltration — across residential, commercial and industrial buildings. You will own each file from the first site investigation to delivery of the rehabilitated structure, defending your conclusions before the courts. The position is based in Laval, on a hybrid schedule, with compensation of up to $140,000.
The role day to day
- Diagnose the causes of structural failures through field investigation and analysis of physical evidence (collapse, settlement, vibration, cracking, infiltration, condensation, frozen pipes).
- Assess the stability of compromised structures and design the temporary shoring required to secure the site, sometimes on an emergency basis.
- Produce structural calculations, rehabilitation plans and specifications sealed under your engineering seal.
- Write expert reports (summary, detailed, Bill 122) that are defensible in court and intended for legal proceedings.
- Act as an expert witness in depositions and before the courts, defending your conclusions under cross-examination.
- Independently manage a portfolio of 8 to 12 active files at once, working with insurers, lawyers, affected property owners and builders.
The ideal profile
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction engineering or architecture, and member in good standing of the OIQ (required to seal expert reports).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the design or diagnosis of multi-material structures (wood, steel, concrete); ideally 7 to 15 years, including 2+ years in forensic engineering, building pathology, insurance claims or construction litigation (a strong asset).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and at least one recognized structural analysis package (SAFI, S-Frame, ETABS, SAP2000 or equivalent), with a demonstrated ability to produce sealed calculations independently.
- Advanced professional French, spoken and written; functional English an asset for Canada-wide files.
- ASP Construction card at hire or within 30 days; valid driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle required.
- Genuine comfort testifying in court, an investigator’s temperament and full autonomy in file management.
What our client offers
- Compensation of up to $140,000 based on experience; full conditions (bonus, emergency on-call) discussed at the first interview.
- Hybrid mode with real flexibility: a 37.5-hour week, flexible hours and Friday afternoons off year-round.
- Comprehensive group insurance, group RRSP/FHSA and RESP.
- Training budget to support your professional development.
