The mandate

Our client, a growing Quebec engineering firm recognized for its forensic (technico-legal) expertise, is hiring a structural engineer for its Expertise division. You will own high-stakes claim files — collapses, settlements, vibrations, cracking, water infiltration, condensation, frozen pipes — on residential, commercial and industrial structures, from the first site investigation through delivery of the rehabilitated structure. This is as much an investigator’s role as an engineer’s: your sealed, court-defensible conclusions drive decisions for insurers, lawyers and disaster-affected owners. The role offers complete autonomy, a varied caseload and rare professional visibility.

The role day to day

• Autonomously manage a portfolio of 8 to 12 active files simultaneously;
• Lead field investigations on residential, commercial and industrial structures;
• Produce sealed structural calculations plus rehabilitation plans and specifications;
• Write expert reports (summary and detailed reports, under Bill 122) that stand up in court;
• Testify as an expert witness in depositions and before tribunals, under cross-examination;
• Design temporary shoring (étaiement temporaire) to secure precarious structures, sometimes in emergency mode;
• Act as a credible point of contact for insurers, lawyers, owners and contractors.

The ideal profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction engineering or architecture;
• Member in good standing of the OIQ — mandatory, to seal expert reports and calculations;
• Minimum 5 years in structural design or diagnosis of multi-material structures (wood, steel, concrete);
• Mastery of AutoCAD and at least one recognized structural analysis software: SAFI, S-Frame, ETABS, SAP2000 or equivalent;
• Advanced professional French, spoken and written; functional English an asset;
• Valid driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle; ASP Construction card at hire or within 30 days.

Two or more years in forensic engineering, building pathology, insurance claims or construction litigation is an important asset.
